Living a fulfilling life

Feeling fulfilled. We all want that, but how do we get it? Good career? Check. Morning workout? Check. Eating healthy? Check. But something is still missing— sometimes, it takes a little more to feel fulfilled and satisfied. CEO of Metrus Group, Dr. William A. Schiemann, interviewed over 100 successful people to find out how to attain this feeling we all strive for. A Guide to living better every day Here are the top five things his research found that fulfilled people do on a daily basis at both work and home to bring about that satisfaction. 1. Have strong values—and stick to them They ensure their values are consistent and reflective of their work, environment and social life. Having contrary beliefs can be debilitating. 2. Practice resilience They are able to bounce back from adversity and focus on long-term goals while dealing with the many setbacks that arise in life.

Canadians don’t get enough of this vitamin

For Canadians, getting the right amount of vitamin D can be a challenge. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for human health. Without it, your body can’t properly absorb vital elements including calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. “The sunshine vitamin” is also a critical component of bone health, and a deficiency early in life can have a dramatic effect as one gets into old age. Recent studies have also linked vitamin D deficiency with medical conditions such as chronic depression and even the onset of winter colds. Because vitamin D is so essential, the human body has evolved a unique way of sourcing it. Radiation from the sun triggers our bodies to manufacture it. Simply being out in the sun with exposed skin for a few minutes will promote healthy levels of vitamin D into our bodies. The problem in countries like Canada is that we don’t get out in the sun much during

The health benefits of Indian spices

Home-cooked Indian food proves a great go-to dinner option—and is an excellent way to burn fat! YOU are too tired to cook after work and find yourself turning again to high-calorie take-out or fast food. You’d love to find the time and energy to prepare healthy meals at home, but cooking—espe- cially trying out new cuisines like Indian—seems too time consuming. On the plus side, Indian spices like tur- meric and cardamom are proven to put the body’s fat-burning machinery in high gear, while home-cooked Indian food is one of the most healthful (and surprisingly easy) dining options for a host of other reasons: Vitamin- and fibre-rich vegetables, legumes (peas, beans and lentils), rice, lean proteins, and spices are the staples of Indian cooking. Indian home cooking is done with canola oil, olive oil or virgin coconut oil—not butter or heavy cream. The flavour-enhancing spices of Indian cuisine reduce the need

Thank the hippies for social media

Seriously. It’s the hippies we should thank for today’s digital social media. All born, essentially, out of the 1970’s hippy collectives around San Francisco. But hippies rejected modern society you say! Off they went into the hills, grew long beards and neither men nor women shaved and they ate “strange” food. Many would become vegetarian or vegan. The First Iteration of a Social Medium was Analog Arguably perhaps, the forefather of today’s social media would be Stewart Brand. He created the hugely popular Whole Earth Catalog in the late 1960’s. He also slammed it shut in 1971 because it became too much of a business. The very essence of the Catalog was that it was written by the people. It had no linear flow, it was a literal mash up of stuff. People sent in information on the tools they developed and reviews and comments were published. It had no

Should terminally ill patients have access to Psilocybin?

Known to many as “shrooms” or “magic mushrooms”, it may well be this could be a breakthrough medication for terminally ill Canadians. In Canada, Psilocybin (Sy-le-sy-bin) mushrooms, of which there are over 200 species, are illegal as a Schedule III drug under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. But they have become a hot topic across the country as an effective treatment for terminally ill patients. One 52 year-old Saskatoon man with terminal cancer suffers greatly from anxiety and is asking the federal government for the right to use Psilocybin to treat his anxiety. He’s tried other medications and therapies, but they’ve had little effect. A recent poll by TheraPsil, a non-profit advocacy group based in Victoria, BC, indicates that 59% of Canadians support the use of this drug when it comes to those who are terminally ill. Studies by world-class medical organisations such as Johns Hopkins, NYU and UCLA
