Digital privacy wars; Apple, Google or Facebook?

I’ll start out by officially stating that I am an Apple fan-boy, though with all these grey hairs, not much of a boy anymore. It seems that almost every day we hear of a data breach or some major topic of our digital privacy being stripped away or invaded. And with good reason. So out of three of the top technology giants today, Apple, Facebook or Google, is focused the most on your actual privacy? The short answer is Apple and it’s a primary reason I remain in the ecosystem. No company is perfect, not even Apple and they’ve had some recent mistakes. But at least they face up to them. In a way, it’s also hard to really compare them. Apple is superb at hardware and software, but doesn’t offer search or many other services, although that’s changing. Facebook isn’t really a hardware company, although they have a couple

Beyond thought

Floating allows your muscles to relax and your mind to reset. I’ll have more of that, please. Like any new experience, I am apprehensive at first. After showering, I slip into the floatation pod, reach up and close the covering overhead. I lay back, floating at near zero G in a shallow bath of Epsom salts. There is mood lighting and ambient music–or darkness and silence. You choose. Time passes. I begin to relax, the tension gradually ebbing away from body and mind. Thoughts surface and drift away. After an hour I slide out and shower again.  The experience is called Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST). A one-hour session is compared to hours of deep restful sleep. It lowers cortisol levels, the hormone produced by chronic stress, and can provide relief to those suffering from chronic pain. I have my first float at The Compass Rose Health and Wellness centre

The 4 pillars of immunity

The four problem areas you need address if you want to stay flu free this season and beyond. Are you feeling under the weather this season? There are ways to prepare your body for this time of year by putting focus on the four pillars of immune health and providing each one with natural health support.  How to build a Strong Immune System Nutrition Nutritional imbalances have been linked to decreased immunity and increased risk of illness. To help the body identify, break down and dispose of invading bugs, our immune system relies on a diverse collection of nutrients. Macronutrients such as protein, carbohydrates and fat help our system build antibodies, which function to identify and remove viruses and bacteria. To perform to its fullest, the immune system also requires micronutrients like folic acid, vitamins A, C, E, B6 and minerals including copper, zinc, selenium and iron.  It’s best to get

Do sex and cannabis go together?

A study from The Journal of Sexual Medicine led by gynaecologist Dr. Becky Kaufman Lynn found that marijuana use prior to sex makes sex more pleasurable for women. The internet is full of claims that marijuana can improve sexual experience, yet, scientific data is lacking. So Lynn decided to lead a study at the Saint Louis University medical school after women kept asking her for advice about mixing cannabis and sex. The objective of the study, later published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, was to determine if marijuana use before sex affects the sexual experience, by how much, and what is affected. The study found that “the majority of women…

Is Facebook just a reflection of society?

Seemingly from every angle, Facebook is under attack, sometimes justifiably so, other times, perhaps a little overzealously. We are quick to blame Facebook as we are Twitter, Google, TikTok, Snap or any other social media platform. But is it really the job of those platforms to determine social behaviours and norms? Etiquette, and what is real or fictional? Perhaps we as humans need to also take a step back and look at ourselves as a global society and species? Facebook has become the punching bag for all that ails us on social media today, the focal point. But it is not Facebook that creates and disseminates divisive political content, that is done by political parties and very often now, foreign actors such as Russia and China intent on destroying democracy. Angry comments, fighting over who is right and wrong, sharing revenge nudes of exes, bullying, ghosting, throwing shade…these are not

Getting your mind ready for winter

This is the season when Nature lies dormant—but plans for spring. What can we learn from her? The season that will not be defined is winter. Many have complaints about this time of year: It is cold, dark, and gloomy. It is harder to drive, energy bills are sky high and we’re all stuck inside. I know, that is but one side of it but let’s follow it along a bit further. Winter as a place or time of internment is prison–Alcatraz was like that. One of the arguments for internment is to give the person who has acted outside of the law a time to reflect on better ways, to recharge and to prepare to contribute when the internment is over. Putting it this way, prison doesn’t sound all that bad. Winter is the season of internment. We have the “inter” of internment. Do we have the benefits? If

A different approach to goal setting

Traditional goal setting often doesn’t work. The mindfulness you learn from yoga can help. We begin with the best intentions, whether our goal is to lose 10lbs, run a marathon or work out five times a week. Recent research has emphasized creating SMART goals: goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. However, even these goals have a high failure rate. The statistics are dreary, with 80% of us not achieving our new year’s resolutions. What are we doing wrong?  When we create goals focused on a singular outcome, they by their very nature set us up for failure. These outcome-focused goals can trigger resistance and frustration because we are constantly fighting against learned behaviours, old habits and prior experiences that create “negative chatter” in our minds. Instead of persevering when we miss the mark, we give up. Adopt a yoga mindset When we adopt the yoga mindset off
