Karsh’s ‘Roaring Lion’ celebrates 80th anniversary

Today we live in yet another era of innocent people caught in the crosshairs. When I see heart-wrenching images of refugees caught between borders or in lands hostile to them, I sometimes despair. In contrast, some stories show the reverse – how a stranger travels to a strange land and rises to opportunity. These stories show how in essence people are much more similar than they are different. The question: do they get the opportunities needed to move ahead?  The story of Yousuf Karsh is truly inspiring. He came to Canada in 1923, alone, as a 15-year old, fleeing the Armenian genocide. His family had been living as refugees in Aleppo, Syria and sent him to live with a maternal uncle in Canada. He spoke little French, and less English.  As an adult, Karsh never brought up his childhood, which, by any standard, was horrifying. He was four years old

Fighting the Good Fight: The Memoir of Patrick Guy Roy

This is the first in a series of stories about retired RCMP officer Patrick Guy Roy who is slowly slipping into Alzheimer’s.  I still remember walking past the house where a gang of boys stood waiting to taunt me. I’d hold my breath, grit my teeth, lower my gaze and hurry past. The taunting went on for what felt like years. It was always the

Mr Speaker! Behind the scenes with the Speaker of the House

It’s not that you haven’t heard of the Speaker of the House. It’s just that you don’t know much about that role in government. Most speakers like to keep it that way. They are happy to stay out of the limelight. For many Canadians, the only time we see the Speaker is on news clips or, if you’re a political news junkie, on C-Span when the House is in session. The Hon. Geoff Regan has served 24 years as a Member of Parliament, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and four years as Speaker of the House in the first Trudeau government. I wanted to take Canadians behind the scenes of the Speaker of the House to understand the history and importance of the role. While we’re talking, Geoff has CNN on mute and I am streaming Jeff Bezos launch into space. Geoff served as Speaker from December of 2015 to

Why travel after COVID-19 is important

Right now, it’s hard to think about travel when we’re spending our days in our homes and we can barely travel farther than our local grocery store.
