Creativity doesn’t know age

It seems today that when we hear about creative geniuses, they all seem to be quite young, such as Mark Zuckerberg becoming a billionaire when he was in his early twenties. Or Bill Gates at just 29 years old. Pablo Picasso and Einstein having their breakthroughs at just their twenties as well. So are we to believe that a moment of creative insight and to be a genius is in our early lives? That as we move into our 50’s and our second phase of life our creative days are slipping away? Absolutely not. If you’re a reader of Silver Magazine, you know we don’t subscribe to such a silly notion! There are many cases of people who have their genius creative moment later in life. Mario Puzo wrote The Godfather when he was 45. Julia Child’s first book was published when she was 49. Grandma Moses began her painting

Michael J. Fox, Incurable Optimist

MICHAEL J. FOX had it all, or so it seemed. At age 29, the Canadian actor had a resume to die for: A succession of TV and move hits, a shelf of awards, a beautiful wife and loving family at home. One of the perks of fame—the people he wanted to meet wanted to meet him. Fox was working on the film Doc Hollywood with Woody Harrelson. He woke up after partying the night before. His little finger was twitching. He thought it was a hangover. But it didn’t stop. His life was changing. ‘You may think you are cast in a challenging role, but it’s how you play it that counts.’ – Michael J. Fox Everything starts with a concept, a vision—a dream. As the Bible says, “In the beginning was the word.” The trick is: Do we allow ourselves to dream? Or do we stay stuck in the

Living a fulfilling life

Feeling fulfilled. We all want that, but how do we get it? Good career? Check. Morning workout? Check. Eating healthy? Check. But something is still missing— sometimes, it takes a little more to feel fulfilled and satisfied. CEO of Metrus Group, Dr. William A. Schiemann, interviewed over 100 successful people to find out how to attain this feeling we all strive for. A Guide to living better every day Here are the top five things his research found that fulfilled people do on a daily basis at both work and home to bring about that satisfaction. 1. Have strong values—and stick to them They ensure their values are consistent and reflective of their work, environment and social life. Having contrary beliefs can be debilitating. 2. Practice resilience They are able to bounce back from adversity and focus on long-term goals while dealing with the many setbacks that arise in life.

Billy Campbell; Actor, Globetrotter

The CTV series Cardinal has brought American actor Billy Campbell back to Canada, his second home – though he’s now mostly in Norway and Denmark. No matter. He stays healthy by trail running, ocean sailing and surfing. Billy Campbell, now 60, marches to the beat of his own drummer. In mid-career he took time off from a high-powered acting career to join the Picton Castle, a square- rigger that sailed from Nova Scotia to deliver charitable donations of school supplies and clothing throughout the South Pacific. Campbell is a tough guy. Also kind and funny. His stories tend to be self- deprecating. An athlete who plays action heroes, he loves reading, especially sci-fi and historical novels. He is obsessed with novels about the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars (this sparked the Picton Castle adventure) and he loves board games (especially on Napoleonic era naval warfare) and (wooden) sailing vessels.

Coming back from paralysis

Who could predict that the experience of contracting and recovering from this debilitating disease could teach so much? ON January 9 of 2013 I found myself standing at the reception window of the emergency wing of our hospital. By evening I could no longer stand and by next morning I had lost the use of my hands, legs and abdomen. Over the next three days I continued to lose the ability to work any muscle below my throat. I had Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a variant of multiple sclerosis, where the myelin coating on the signal lines between brain and muscle was being destroyed. This was scary, to say the least, especially since I had GBS once before, in the year 2000, and knew I could lose ability to breathe, to swallow and to talk. I could die. I was afraid of those possibilities as I lay in the Intensive Care Unit. I

Do sex and cannabis go together?

A study from The Journal of Sexual Medicine led by gynaecologist Dr. Becky Kaufman Lynn found that marijuana use prior to sex makes sex more pleasurable for women. The internet is full of claims that marijuana can improve sexual experience, yet, scientific data is lacking. So Lynn decided to lead a study at the Saint Louis University medical school after women kept asking her for advice about mixing cannabis and sex. The objective of the study, later published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, was to determine if marijuana use before sex affects the sexual experience, by how much, and what is affected. The study found that “the majority of women…
