When travel renews our perspective

The magic of travel can renew your daily perspective. There’s something about travel that lightens your mind. Yes, there’s anxiety and stress that comes with a vacation, but there is also a sense of calm that will leave you feeling lighter, both physically and psychologically, before, during and after your travels. BEFORE YOU GO It all starts with a plan. You sit down with a vision of a destination and write a list of what your trip could look like. Use all of your senses. Where do I want to go? What do I want to see? What do I want to do? The anticipation brings your mind to a whole new place. It’s a refreshing escape from the stressful day you just endured. Through the planning process, you develop your desire for something new. The prospect of adventure and new geography will ease your typical daily aggravations. Leading up to your vacation,

The health benefits of Indian spices

Home-cooked Indian food proves a great go-to dinner option—and is an excellent way to burn fat! YOU are too tired to cook after work and find yourself turning again to high-calorie take-out or fast food. You’d love to find the time and energy to prepare healthy meals at home, but cooking—espe- cially trying out new cuisines like Indian—seems too time consuming. On the plus side, Indian spices like tur- meric and cardamom are proven to put the body’s fat-burning machinery in high gear, while home-cooked Indian food is one of the most healthful (and surprisingly easy) dining options for a host of other reasons: Vitamin- and fibre-rich vegetables, legumes (peas, beans and lentils), rice, lean proteins, and spices are the staples of Indian cooking. Indian home cooking is done with canola oil, olive oil or virgin coconut oil—not butter or heavy cream. The flavour-enhancing spices of Indian cuisine reduce the need

Hiking? Look at the trees.

Heading out for a hike this weekend? Going deep into a forest or skirting the edges of one? As you trot along, stop. Look at the trees. Not just the tops, but the trunk and the roots. In our childhood, trees were these amazing things that we climbed. As high as we could get. Perhaps we dared our friends to climb higher? Perhaps we swung from them on a tire or a rope, splashing into a lake. In autumn they’d show us amazing colours. In winter they were bare bones. You may be surprised however, to learn that trees are amazing, living things. They talk to each other and they will even help each other heal when they are sick! Wait what? Trees connect to each other not just through their roots, but they use various kinds of fungi. Trees send messages to each other through fungi and in return,

Travel etiquette mistakes

Travelling soon? Here are some travel tips to help you and your fellow travellers have a more enjoyable flight! This is a popular time of year for travelling. With spring break underway, and Canadians aching for some fun in the sun, the worst part of the whole experience seems to be the time it takes to reach the destination. For lots of people, flying can be a stressful and sometimes aggravating experience—especially when others recline their seats too far back or steal your arm rest. But another reason for potential stress and anger from passengers may be due to the increase in the number of people travelling. According to Stats Canada, Canadian residents made a record 12.8 million trips to overseas destinations (countries other than the United States) in 2017, which was 7.2% more than in 2016. In fact, the number of Canadians travelling overseas has increased yearly since 2003.

The art of survival with Les Stroud

Les Stroud has been bitten by sharks, chased by a rampaging bull moose, survived solo adventures in extreme conditions across the planet, and undergone shamanic rituals in the darkest jungles. Through it all, he strives to follow one simple rule: Remain calm. Les Stroud has led a life of extremes, but he’s not an extreme guy. As the star of Survivorman, he pretty much invented the genre of solo adventure TV, but he grew up in the city of Toronto. A former outdoor guide, he and his (now ex-) wife lived far off the grid, experimenting with a Paleolithic existence. On his latest TV show, Beyond Survival, he joins in rituals among indigenous peoples across the globe, but he also teaches survival skills to elite members of the Canadian Forces. A member of the prestigious Manhattan-based Explorers Club, he also refers back to what he learned as a garbage collector.

Tips for your posture when traveling

When traveling, we’re often prone to body aches and cramping. Here are some tips to keep you pain free as you travel. Healthy travel tips for seniors Our bodies are not designed to be sitting for long periods. We are designed to be hunting and gathering food, so when we are cramped in a small airplane seat or stuck in the back seat of a car, pain can often become an unwanted travel companion. Here are some tips to keep you pain free as you travel. Bring a Neck Pillow A neck pillow to support your neck as you doze off can help to prevent cramping of the cervical muscles when in an awkward sleeping position. Sitting increases pressure to the joints and muscles of the neck. Neither car and airplane seats offer support to the neck which in itself can lead to pain. Using a light weight pillow that
